The Collector!

Every year, at one of the shows at which I exhibit, I am visited by a lovely lady who purchases several "sisters" for her grandmother, who is unable to attend the show herself. This tradition began at the very beginnings of "Nun of a Kind", and Grandma has amassed several more than pictured here. She uses her collection to "gift" certain people in the family, if a certain name, hobby, or profession of a certain nun doll suits them, and has them placed around her home as decorations. Her granddaughter makes a point to visit the booth every year to add to the collection. This year, I added some "Little Sister" ornaments to the purchase for another little gift for Grandma. She has made earrings out of them for this photo!

After all these years we are finally sending you a group picture of Grandma and her many nuns.
I first purchased her a nun from the craft show approximately 10 years ago. This was the best gift that Christmas! Each year we make a trip to the craft show JUST for your Nuns, as we could not possible go a year with out one.
My Great Uncle Paul (Kay's brother) a former Jesuit Brother now lives in a long term care centre run by Nuns, has received Sister Superior and Sister Holy Mackerel (because you need fish for the soup). They are very much enjoyed by all.

My Great Aunt Eileen, has Sister Holy Roller because we felt she needed a little good luck.
All the Nun's grandma has received now has a name of someone in the family written on it. They are to be handed down to the family member she feels suits them the most. Now that the Monks have arrived, we have a whole new set of members to assign them to....cause we can't leave out the boys :)
Grandma had worked on the ships as a cook when she was in her 20's. Had 5 children, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grand daughters. She loves music, poetry, dancing and figure skating.

I hope you enjoy the pictures as they have brought much joy to our family....every Christmas it's a given she will get another, the fun is what the newest addition will be.

Winter dreams...

Although it has not been as "terrible" a winter as some of the past, it does not take much grey weather to infuse some "cabin fever". A trip south, to bask in the sun, or to an island, would be lovely right about now! However, like "Sister Gaye Paree", pictured here, planning a springtime trip to Paris would be ideal!
Perhaps "Sister" would like to tour the City of Lights in these ever-so-practical stiletto heels....complete with "La tour Eiffel"....

The Beauty of "Props"!

A while ago, a very talented photographer contacted me regarding exchanging hats for photos. I was lucky enough to receive these photos earlier this week. I have posted them to my "Sticks and Strings" site, and have received two orders for this particular hat. I hope that the customers do not think that the baby pictured is included with their purchase! What a difference having a live "model" makes...and a very good photographer! Thanks to Theresa Brereton for her wonderful photos. Looking forward to more!

As one who likes to create gifts for people, or purchase handmade as gifts, I was especially thrilled to receive this lovely glass pendant as a special gift myself! My son has started creating glass pieces, and I was lucky enough to receive this one, one that I had admired in photos that he had posted of his work. A special gift indeed....

spend more time reading! Now that the busy prep season of the fall shows is over, there is a bit more time to delve into more books than usual. Although I am a "book" person, I did receive an e-reader for Christmas, and must admit that I have enjoyed using it. Learned how to download books from our library, and know that having this device will make it easier to cart books on holiday, etc.
First e-reader book..."The Little Giant of Aberdeen County" by Tiffany Baker. Loved it.
Also read "Zero Hour" by David Baldacci. A great read as well.
....on to the next!

Almost ready....

to shut down the workshop until the new year. Some orders are still filtering in, but should not take too long, unlike the list that was facing me last week! This is the point in the year at which I run out of things...or misplace them....or forgot to order them....etc. Each of the figures that I make requires that I sew and paint heads and hands. Of course....I ran out of the prepared ones. That is a delay of two days. Because I had one figure left to make, it caused my eye to wander to some of the figures that I had removed from the collection for various reasons...a process done a few times of year to make sure that the figures meet the quality control inspector...me! In a very "Dexter" like move, the hands were removed from one of the figures to apply to another. A bit creepy, but "saved the day". Reminds me of making macrame owls "back in the day" and using guinea hen feathers to apply to the finished piece. No guinea hen feathers to be found in any supply store in this whole city....but happened to notice some on a guinea hen at the local animal farm during a visit with my young child....and no, I was not that desperate. No guinea hens were harmed in the making of said macrame owl!

"Sister Delta Hand"...the tree topper!

This tree-topper was the result of a special order placed at the "One of a Kind" show. The buyer wished to have a non-traditional (make that "nun-traditional") tree topper to grace the decorated tree in his home. Card games are the norm for the entertaining in his home, and this "sister" will sit atop the tree, and with her hidden hand of cards, is "in the game" as well.
Fun assignment! Also, food for thought for next year's line....adding "Nun of the Above", the angel nun, done up as a tree topper!

Holiday prep!

Back from the "One of a Kind" show in Toronto, (a five-day stint...most vendors do an 11 day stretch! I admire them for their fortitude!) and happy to say that the "sisters" were warmly received. Thanks to Cathy, who helped throughout the five day show plus set-up, and to Karen, who came for a few days of the sale. Thanks to them, visitors to the show were introduced to the "sisters", because an explanation of the concept ("sisters" sharing "habits"), plus pointing out the "punny" names, required more than one person at the booth!
There was a wonderful array of items for purchase at the show, and I did try to restrain my spending. Managed to find some unique, handmade gifts....always so appreciated!
Although my own house requires "decking", it will be about a week before I surface from the work that was waiting for me upon my return. The "sisters" have been popular on the websites, and hat orders still are coming in. Add to that some gifts that I wanted to make for my own friends and family. Not complaining, though! It will all "happen" as it usually does! Notice...not a word about preparing Christmas feasts or baking holiday treats....something has to "go" and it may as well be the kitchen tasks! :)

Reading with "Sister Paige Turner"

"So many books, so little time"....how true! Just like fitting in time for the gym, scheduling a reading time into a busy day is part of my routine. I manage to "work in" the reading....the gym, not so much!
Wanted to pass along a book suggestion..."The Best Laid Plans" by Terry Fallis. This book is entertaining from the very first page, and is filled with humor, puns, mishaps, clever language, and through all of this, a journey through grief. I have purchased copies as gifts for friends who all share the same opinion. Can't wait to dive into the second book "The High Road"! Insight into the workings of Canadian government as well, but one would certainly not have to be Canadian to enjoy this read!
Preparing for the "One of a Kind" show in Toronto should keep me away from the reading for a while....the time is "closing in", and as usual, the quota in my mind is beyond what I have time or energy to prepare...but I will give it a try! Hope to see you if you are in the Toronto area at that time...Booth P30, from November 24th-28th!

"Sister Act", The Musical....

was just featured in tonight's episode of "Dancing with the Stars"....and reminded me of a great email I received in January of this year. A recipient of two of the "sisters" from the "Nun of a Kind" collection contacted me, because she was involved with the musical being prepared for Broadway. She suggested that perhaps my "sisters" might be a good "fit" with the show as one of their souvenirs. For a few weeks, I lived in hope that this might happen, even though it is never likely that handmade is attractive enough in a business setting like this. Some nice conversations, great comments, but, it was not to be. I did, however, receive some of the items that were in the giftshop on Broadway because a friend of mine did go to the show when she was in New York in September. I have the Playbill even though it is unlikely that I will actually make it to the show myself....and heard that it was fantastic!
One of the "sisters" did make it to 42nd Street, though...sent as a sample, and hopefully gracing someone's bookshelf there now! The dream was great while it lasted!! :)

A Very Special Sister....

is the reason that this particular "Sister" has been created. At shows, I am often asked to create a new "sister", and this request was a reminder of one of the reasons that all of this began in the first place! The request was for a nun for a piano teacher....and my own piano teacher was one of the three special "sisters" which prompted this site. Pictured here is "Sister Mary Melody"....my own special Sister was Sister St. Louis, who taught music at a local convent. Every week, I would take two different buses to reach that destination, and from the age of eleven until she retired just before I left for university, I spent an hour a week with this very patient woman. Although I love to play the piano (and do it less and less now), I cannot imagine listening to students struggle with the keys each week, hour after hour. She was always very encouraging, but firm. When she celebrated her fiftieth year in the order, she gave me a gift of the rosary which she wore during that time, and it is a very special treasure to this day. She prepared her students through the practical and written portions of the conservatory work, and again, I must applaud her patience. She is missed.

From time to time, one hears a name and wonders what the parents were thinking....and this was brought to mind the other day when while watching some film credits (am I the only one that wait for this?? I just have to read those for every film!) I noticed the name "Chris P. Bacon". Add to that list other names of people met along the way....Mary Christmas, Sara Lee, Robin Hood, Easton West....and many more. Any names to add to the list??

"Sisters" at the show....

The first show of my "season" was held this past weekend. Outdoor shows are always a concern because of the weather, but this show was also at a new venue, run by new volunteers, the Rotary Club of Sarnia/Bluewaterland, so it was like a brand new show to me even though I have done this particular event for many years. "Art in the Park" moved from its previous location to a larger park "down the road", which offered "on site" parking, and more spacious areas for display. All was extremely well planned, with vendors and shoppers alike being very pleased!
A beautiful day, wide open spaces, food booths, garden areas, and about 100 vendors....
The "Sisters" enjoying their new "habit-at" at this show....along with some of the other creations available that day!
The new park, a beautiful park along the lake, which is really under-used in this area, proved to be an excellent choice for the sale. The Rotary Club should be more than pleased with the visitor turn-out, and the compliments about their show. Their volunteer base was excellent, and it is likely that this event will run at this location for many years to come! Ordering that fabulous weather was a good move, too! :)

The Sole Sister....

had a huge influence on my shopping "habits" this summer! She, the "sister" who loves shoes, was with me in spirit during my shopping expeditions, forcing me to purchase nine new pairs of shoes! Insanity! Truth be told, all of them were on sale, and the pricing was so good that the stores were practically paying me to take them home! (that's my story and I am sticking to it...)
The sad fact is three pairs of these shoes are totally not useful for my daily life, at this point. The five-inch stilettos are not going to be too useful for craft shows, working in my workroom, or the occasional days in the classroom. They did make it to a wedding this summer, though!
The other shoes were a little more practical, and added to the massive collection I already have, I am sure that they will eventually see some use. Can a "sister" have too many shoes? I think not!

The most wonderful time of the year....

and one that many people, young and older, are dreading, unless they are the fortunate ones leaving for university or college for the first time....Otherwise, this "back to school" business is not so appealing! I spend fewer and fewer days in classrooms these days, and do not have to rush back to prepare a classroom, etc., so the upcoming weekend holiday holds no sense of "dread" for me. The signs that summer is fading, after a very late start, is the upsetting part!
On the other hand, it is also the beginning of craft show season for me. I do not do summer shows, partly because I exhibit many Christmas decor items at my shows as well as the "sisters", and partly because....well, it is too nice for me to work on the few weekends that we have in the summer! So, the next few months will be spent working frantically on all of the items that are in various stages of production in my workroom. Nothing like a deadline to make me work at optimum speed! In the next few posts, you will be introduced to the five new "sisters" who are joining the order for the fall shows. My mind has been working, even though my hands have been more idle than they should have been!

Annual Spending Spree!

Our annual trip to the tent sale at the "Spinrite Factory" took place today! Cathy was the chauffeur this year, and we did our usual route....Our first stop was at a quilt shop. We are getting better about restraint at that shop. Cathy purchased what she needed, and I purchased....nothing! (that is a "first"!)
Our second stop was at the tent sale. We had never been there during the first week before, so seeing so many people in the tent, and so many people in line was a big change...but did not stop us! The first year that we went to this sale, we scoffed at the fact that the staff gave us a garbage bag, presumably to fill with our new "finds". We could not believe that anyone would buy so much yarn. We took home about three garbage bags full of yarn bargains that day. We became "believers" in the tent sale!
This year, Cathy refrained from buying any yarn, stating that she had not yet used up the yarn from last year! (I didn't know that we were supposed to do that before we bought more!??) I, however, was in my glory! I found many colors of cotton which I had not been able to find in our stores, and kept filling those bags. We discovered as we carried them out of the tent sale that cotton is much heavier than the yarn which we usually buy, so it was an adventure getting them to Cathy's car. Cathy carried one of the heavy bags....she goes for another therapy session on her back tomorrow. I hope that the tent sale did not ruin her previous treatments! The bags which are loaded in the car contain all of my "treasures" from today's sale. However, there is still a main building in which to shop. I managed to buy only a regular sized bag in that part of the store!
On our way home, we visited "The Wagon Shed" in Arva, Ontario, which features spinning, quilts, yarns, handmade articles, etc. The owner spent a long time with us, explaining the business, and telling us her stories. What a great place to go to create! I envy her this great spot! She was piecing together some quilt blocks when we arrived, and moved over to her spinning wheel while she spoke with us. Talented, and interesting!
My next chore is to sort out my "candy" from today....move all of that yarn to an appropriate spot in the house! Some has made it to the hall tree bench in the front hall (for immediate use) and I expect that the rest will be packaged in bins, and placed in my craft storage unit....along with the rest of last year's yarn purchases not yet used! :)

A Great Gift idea....

from a talented artist at "Etsy". A unique way to record the guests name at a wedding rather than a guest book....this wedding tree, personalized poster! A unique gift on its own or with another item, this poster can be ordered already printed up, or as a PDF file to have printed up as you wish. I opted for the PDF file...partly to avoid delivery "headaches" and fear of postal delays, and partly because I was just not organized enough to order it in time for that option! This particular one comes with a stamp pad which the guests use to add their fingerprints to the tree, along with their names. Although I love this option, I feared that the wedding guests might not like to risk getting the green ink on their wedding finery, so I opted for the printed tree.
This printed tree PDF file arrived promptly, and was sent off to the local print shop, where, for a reasonable fee, it was printed on 18x24 poster paper. The finished copy was presented to the wedding couple, along with a frame, as part of their wedding gift. Very pleased with the results and the ease of completion, and plan to order another, which will be printed with colored leaves for an upcoming fall wedding! "Wedding Wabbits"....

"Tis the wedding season around here, and needed to have something for a "topper" to the gift. This particular bride has a pet rabbit....so in honor of her bunny, I created this little wedding couple. Great fun to make, and loved decorating them for their "big day"...

The "bride to be" loved them so much that it is very likely that they will be the topper for the wedding cake! ....and they will live "hoppily" ever after.....

First Triathlon....

in which I have ever participated! No, not as this "dashing dude" who has been in a running race...
or this cyclist....but as someone who puts the numbers on the runners/riders/swimmers. My idea of a personal triathlon is quite different...stop, drop, and roll...? eat, drink, and be merry...?
This local triathlon today saw many participants ready to brave our still humid, hot weather to be in various parts, or all three of the activities. After "marking" these people (with permanent marker, no less! Apparently, sunscreen takes it off your skin! Good to know!), I did watch the swimming event. A great day for this...the water was perfect, and the temperature a lot warmer than in other years. They are still riding, and running out there now....but I am back home in the air-conditioning! My "event" is over for another year! :)

The Heat is On....

and how are you all coping with it? We wait all winter for this, but it has taken a while to get here and is quite a shock!! Sister Esther Jen here is suffering from her own personal "summers", but she is a good example of expressions on faces during this heat wave!
The "heat is on" for another reason....very slack about getting items ready for the upcoming shows, and September is just around the corner! Work best under pressure, so have set myself up for it once again this year!
In the meantime, find somewhere cool to sit, something cool to drink, good books to read, and a minimum of work to do....and we should all survive the rising thermometer readings, which we will wish for once again in a few short months!!

Photo help for "Etsy"....

I love to create. I hate to take photos. I do not have the ability, nor do I want to take the time to learn a complicated photo editing program. I have little success with a light box. Love a pure white background for photos, but no matter what, could never seem to find the "cure" for my photos. Instead, I would head back down to the sewing room, and sew something rather than try to fix/improve my photos...and this fixing/improving is such an important task for "etsy" photos.
Enter a new app available to "etsy" shops...this app is called "Fotofuze", and one can access it directly from the "etsy" account. The photo correction process involves choosing the photo (which you upload into their site), and then using a "highlighter" with your computer mouse, to fill in the item and the shadows. You then have a chance to preview, and then upload the corrected photo. Once you have the five that you may want for any given listing, the corrected photos can be uploaded directly to your "etsy" site. Amazing! You can see in this first example that my background is quite yellow. Not bad, but not what I was going for....

In the corrected example, the background is completely white! Love it! Even a "techno-peasant" like me managed to do this! Working my way through my photos until I get a chance to re-do some of them (remember, I run to the sewing machine instead of the camera!), but the results for the ones that I have finished so far are much better than the originals' background. The service is completely free. However, if you wish, and this is a feature that you would find yourself using, along with some of the other apps or sites available, one may choose to contribute a given amount to be distributed among the sites that you like. (through "jungl.com"...explained on the site) This is an option....otherwise, totally free!
Since I have two shops, I tried to use the app for both, and even though I thought that I had registered each separately, I must have made an error somewhere, because for a while, they were "mixed". Have no fear! Support at Fotofuze returned my plea for help quite quickly, and worked with me to solve the problem. (and by "worked with me", I mean they solved the problem...the part I did was tell them about it! :)
So, if you are having the same photo difficulty as I am, you might like to try this app!

Summer...finally here??

After the longest spring rainy season ever it seems, the summer season is finally arriving! The "kick off" to the summer craft show season began as well...our local "Artwalk", and "Art in the Park" in Windsor, Ontario. Both enjoyed spectacular weather this weekend, and thankfully so. Last year, both shows had to shut down early because of violent weather, winds and rainfall. It is great that the organizers and the vendors were able to enjoy strong crowds, and likely, great sales due to the better weather this year. Sadly, because of family commitments, I was not able to attend the shows, either as a vendor or a buyer!
This week promises to be warmer, and more humid. Perhaps you will be enjoying the lake, a pool, or a garden hose like this one shown "cooling off" children on a hot summer's day. After the winter we had....bring it on!

"Kids" in "Lids"

The "Sisters" are going to be jealous about all the time I have spent making these items! Our local hospital shop is now carrying the infant sizes. The trick will be not to spend more than I earn in there! So many lovely gift items for all ages....

"Garden of Weedin'"

and pruning, and trimming, and clearing, and dividing....amazing how our very rainy spring has managed to help cultivate everything into "overgrowth"...and even the weeds! A recent sunny day allowed a partial start to the yard. Thankfully, my yard is not quite as overgrown as that shown in this photo....(thanks to Shorpy.com for the photo!) but it will take several days to get around the yard in hopes of bringing it to its best. Why is it that it seems like a good idea to add gardens when one first moves into a place, only to realize that the upkeep easily becomes a chore rather than a joy? When all is finally "back in shape", (and the weather cooperates to allow for this to happen), many hours will be spent out there enjoy the fruits of my labor...reading, floating in the pool, enjoying coffee on the deck....and trying to avoid noticing that those chores all need doing again!

Girlfriends and other "sisters"....

probably the most important people in your life, other than immediate family. The ones who listen to your problems, (usually without judgement!), love to hear about new events in your life, "aunts" to your kids, and laugh at "life" with you!
There are "Lucy" friends, and "Ethel" friends...the leaders and the followers. The "Thelma" friends and the "Louise" friends....looking for adventures. Most of my life, I have been "Lucy" to my friends....mostly because of my "Lucy" moments, not so much for leadership! However, of late, one of my best friends is rapidly gaining the "Lucy" crown....and we share many laughs because of this. She has delivered shoes to me from the gym, thinking that I left them there, when, in fact, they were not my shoes, and someone might have been wondering how she was going to get home from the gym without her shoes...she has run into a building to retrieve something, and jumped back into a running car, while her running car was sitting beside this one....she has forgotten that she brought her car to the gym, and walked to the coffee shop without bringing her car with her....and so on, and so on! Her mishaps are my amusement, and laughter is the best medicine! (plus, I am glad that things like this happen to someone else for a change!) :)

the wedding planner, is so happy that the Royal Wedding day is finally here! She was certainly instrumental in organizing the events of the "big day", and is happy to see that all is progressing as planned.
Seriously, when one knows how much planning goes into a regular wedding, can you imagine the work involved (not to mention the expense!) in this one? Beautiful couple, and I look forward to watching the whole thing, which I have taped. Fan that I am, I did not get up at 3 a.m. to witness the event, while wearing my hat, and sipping my tea! How did you spend the Royal Wedding day??

Before I can say that I am amazed at how much "stuff" this person has accumulated, I have to think of how much I, myself, would have to "purge" if facing such a move. Much easier to say...donate, yard sale, re-cycle, or trash, when it is someone else's stuff. My vow, when this is over, is to start on my own home, and get rid of any excess clutter until there is "nun" left.....

Connie's Tea Room....

in Petrolia, Ontario, is a wonderful place to "do lunch"! Connie, pictured with the gift of "Sister Amelia Love", is the proprietor, and the person who works so hard to prepare delicious meals for lunches...along with her fantastic selection of desserts! I meant to take a picture of the favorite dessert that I sometimes always seem to order, (a lemon cheesecake, topped with lemon, and dare I say it...whipped cream!) but somehow, this dessert disappeared before I remembered to take a photo!
Connie designed and decorated her tearoom, and it has become a favorite place to visit when in this little town. The "Victoria Playhouse Theatre" is nearby, and during the summer season, Connie's becomes a busy little spot for theatre-goers as well. So nice to see this talented young lady "living her dream"! I just hope that my visits out there are not too frequent, given the fact that I cannot resist the dessert!

Miss Mallory...

visited a baby show in our town today, and I was able to personally give her part of a gift (a hat from my "Sticks and Strings" shop) that I have been meaning to bring over for some time now! It seems that each time that I buy something for a baby gift, it is ages before I actually get it over to the intended recipient, and this baby is no different in receiving things later than I intend. Thankfully, she came to this little show today, and Mom Laura was able to pick out one that she liked. Mallory is a beautiful, smiling baby girl, and apparently is very good-natured, and even allows her parents to get a decent night's sleep...even at four months!

Let's hope that I get the rest of the gift over to Miss Mallory before she heads off to university!

Do You "Journal"?

This seems to be something that people routinely do, and I admire them for it. I started a little "line a day" journal, which tracks activities for five years...the journal, my only purchase on a recent trip to Florida. (how did I end up in an area with absolutely no shopping???) In any case, this seemed like a good idea at the time. A month "in", though, I am already changing the format. First of all, most of my entries to date have been completely boring, plagued with daily chores, events, etc. Nothing exciting for future generations to read! Rather than resort to fictional writing to "spice" things up a bit, the format will now be "what did I learn today"....hopefully, there will be some little thing that is "new" to me....

Trees of Life...

by a talented new jewelry artist, Kate, of "Accented Elements"! Shown here are two variations of one of Kate's specialties, the "Tree of Life" pendant. I am lucky enough to own one, and every time that I wear it, I receive many compliments about it. (I own the tree of life in amethyst, but all of the colors are beautiful!) Also pictured is that particular design with garnet stones. I have "gifted" friends with the jade colored stones, and also the coral...so easy to find one that "fits" the favorite clothing color of the recipient! She makes beautiful "one of a kind" statement pieces as well.
Not only is this young lady talented in her jewelry making, she also creates felted hats. Her work can be seen at her blog, which she has used to showcase the various media in which she works. Simply click on the headings of the type of work you would like to see to view her hats, (not yet available in her shop, but questions can be sent to her email from this site regarding these), her wrapped jewelry, her feather jewelry, etc. I have a feeling that the list will grow! She has even taught herself to knit and has completed some wonderful projects that may one day be added to her shop! Talent galore! (did I mention that she is also a talented musician??)
She is also doing custom wedding jewelry, and would be happy to entertain requests. I recently commissioned her to create little nest pendants for all of my nieces with pearls that were from their grandmother's necklace. A lovely keepsake, and a beautiful piece of jewelry to add to their collection!

rejoice! There is help for us all...and it comes in the form of a 16 year old young man who appears regularly on the "Marilyn Denis" show, shown nationally on Canadian television stations. Nicholas Montgomery does a fantastic job of explaining to people less experienced with technological/electronic devices of why, and how best to use them. For those of us who used to leave the VCR blinking "12:00" whenever there was a power failure, simply because we didn't know how to fix it (put masking tape over it...:), this young man does an amazing job of explaining the information. He really is an asset to the show. If you do not have access to this television show, you will be able to see some of this at the website.
For years, Marilyn Denis was the host of "Cityline" in Toronto. She has an amazing wit, and is able to converse with anyone comfortably. It was a sad day when we learned that she would no longer be hosting the show. Thankfully, a few years later now, we are able to enjoy Marilyn on her own show. She hosts many celebrities (just had a wonderful interview with Sir Elton John), and has her own little group of "experts" in their fields, including a butler who lets us "in" on many butler secrets, as far as keeping up a home, entertaining, etc. Whether I am sewing, working at home, or spending time on a treadmill, Marilyn is a great companion with whom to spend some time. Back to technology...yesterday, Nicholas was discussing digital cameras, photos, etc. Time to apply some of my new-found knowledge now!

Special Sisters...

for two special sisters....a custom order sent to me through email, with a description of both of the ladies...one being a knitter, a graduate with multiple degrees, and highly involved in her church...the other being someone who is an accomplished singer, musician, gardener, and featured with her prize yellow electric guitar! (how lucky was I that I happened to have one of those guitars!) Such a fun assignment, and photos were sent back and forth, along with the ideas for these sisters, thanks to digital photos!
The photo at the top of the page shows the recipients opening their special gifts. I am told that they were delighted with the personalization, and I am sure that they were very impressed with Sally's resourcefulness in seeking out something that would be so personal to each of them! It was great fun being part of the surprise, and as I often say in occasions like this, I would love to be a "fly on the wall" when these sorts of gifts are presented. I'm always there "in spirit"! :)

"Nuns of Steel"...

and I have joined a gym. Since the gym is right in the neighborhood, and is open 24 hours a day, "Sister" and I figure that it might actually be a gym membership that is used!
The machines are top-notch, and all of the cardio machines have their own televisions! There's a selling point right there....and no, not because I would park myself on the treadmill just to watch television, but it does help! Each member has a session with a trainer. The trainer I met with is so enthusiastic and friendly. She introduces members to the machines, and develops a routine for one to follow. My day was yesterday, and I am typing this because my fingers are the only things that I can move! By the end of the session, I didn't think that she was so nice or so friendly.
The one good thing about this new experience is that I am fairly certain that I have come up with a new item for my "line". Trainer revenge dolls, just like "voodoo" dolls...pretty sure that I can sell many to new clients at the gym after their first session! Going off to create the first one now.....:)

A Spring "Bonnet"...

At this time of year, many hats are prepared for upcoming shows, internet sales, etc. I love having these little hats to give to the little people in my life, and Miss Adelaide is a beautiful model wearing one of them! As her grandmother says, the photographer must have liked the flower at the top rather than off to the side, but nonetheless, she looks adorable in this little rolled brim hat! It is great that it will fit her through the spring and summer as well. I have a few more little hats to drop off to the little girls who have been born lately....have to live vicariously through the lives of other grandparents...but at least I have "grand-students"!

Sister Mary Sunshine...

and I were off to the sunny climes of Florida last week for a very brief visit. Nice to have a little break from the snow and the cold that has been plaguing us here for more months than usual! In Florida, we enjoyed temperatures which allowed us to walk around without coats, sweaters, etc. and even enjoy the outdoor pool!
This location was in a downtown area of Tampa, and although there wasn't a beach nearby, the walkways were great for taking in the views of the area, and enjoying the weather before it gets unbearably hot and humid there. The only downfall? Sister Accumulata and I could not find any stores in which to shop! However, Sister Maria Lemieux went to two NHL games, so she was the happiest of the group!

Had to take a moment to pass on this video....filmed at the Eaton Centre in Toronto, as forwarded to me. I have watched it many times, and have been amazed, as I always am at this sort of "gathering", at how it was actually accomplished....this is the story I was sent. Enjoy the video, and I am sure that you will "pass it on" as I have!
This is a "flash mob" dance, organized by Kim MacGregor, to honor her best friend Erika Heller, who died of colon cancer last year. Each and every conversation that Kim would have with her friend would end with Erika telling Kim that she was "an amazing woman"! Kim wanted to do something to honor the memory of this dear friend and created this is the result. The effort seems to have honored the memory of many amazing women, as you will see at the close of the video. Enjoy!

"Sister Maddy Tate", the "sister" who loves to practise yoga, has been added to the "order". I was having difficulty coming up with a name for this "sister", which again, is the result of a special order, and invited readers to put forth their suggestions. Annie, from "My Minimocs", came up with some very meaningful suggestions, particularly if you knew a lot about yoga. She also came up with this name for the more generic yoga follower, who might not spend as much time learning about yoga, in terms of traditional beliefs. Thanks, Annie! I will be sending along a special "Sister" to Annie, which she has chosen (sort of) from the collection. She actually narrowed it down to four, and asked me to choose, and I chose.....almost slipped up...she doesn't have it yet, so shhhhh! :)
This new yoga "sister" will be modified slightly when it is available at my "Etsy" shop. In the photo here, she is carrying her yoga mat, and a chart of yoga positions. For future versions, she will carry the mat and a list of positions that she practises. Once she gets more agile at these, she will truly be a "twisted sister"! Coming soon...the chiropractor "sister"...the "untwisted sister"!

Ornaments...in January!

Two new additions to the "line" were added, thanks to a customer request. (actually, two customers requesting this at about the same time....great minds think alike!) The request for a male figure, a priest, or minister, resulted in the creation of the ornament, "Father Christmas", now added to the "Etsy" shop. As with the "sisters" in the line, sometimes these are not meant for actual nuns as gifts, but rather biological or "friend sisters". One of these was purchased as a gift for the parish priest, and another for a father figure in the household.
The "Little Sisters" were added as new ornaments this season as well, and had their debut at the "One of a Kind" show. Ideal for a gift "topper", or slipped into a greeting card as a little gift to mail away, this item proved to be popular. There is a wine called "Little Black Dress", and these little "sisters" have graced more than one or two bottles as special gifts for friends. "Girls Night Out" is another wine for which this would be a great addition! Not sure which part of the gift was appreciated more...the wine or the ornament! :)

I am currently working to create a nun who does yoga....a special order, and this one does have a special personal name. The request was for one doing a pose, but sadly, the poor "sister" did not have much flexibility (despite her hours of yoga) and now, will sport a yoga position chart, and carry her yoga mat. When this is added to the "sisterhood", I will need a "punny" name, relating to yoga. "Game on"!....free "sister" of your choice to the person who sends me the name that I use!

Jim of WynneArts is busy stocking his shop with many of his photo creations, which feature photographs, and digital art. He has some great cards for the photographers in your life, as well as some for knitters and spinners. Prints are being added to the shop as well, and again, something for the photographers and camera "buffs" is already there! The shop will be building daily, and truly, even the cards are suitable for framing. Talented guy....and the designer of my website!

"Steppin' Out"...

or maybe "steppin' in", given icy road conditions! This "sister" is not making any New Year's resolutions, but trying to reach as close to 10,000 steps a day whenever possible. The "Step Sister" plan is thwarted a bit by the bad weather, and the fact that slipping and falling are not an option, particularly since the previous leg injury is still on the "mend". So, thank goodness for the treadmill, which at least allows an opportunity to "add some steps" rather safely. Running up and down the stairs to the computer rather than having the laptop on the main floor helps as well....but it will be great to see the nicer weather and feel inclined to go outside to get these steps in!
The best purchase I have made is this particular pedometer. After having purchased many which attached to belts, waistbands, etc. and fell off or re-set themselves so one really didn't have any idea how many actual steps were taken, did some research and discovered this one. Previous ones would let you add hundreds of steps just by jumping up and down a bit...not this one! It resets itself at midnight, allows to you to see the past seven days efforts, also allows you to see "aerobic" steps, (walking for minutes without stopping), tallies up the distance walked in a day, and has a handy clock as well. Looked high and low for this particular model at sports stores, etc. and managed to find it in our local drugstore! The best part is that this model can be placed in a pocket rather than having to attach it to a waistband, and does not have to be upright in order to work. The "workings" of this pedometer are different than the "pendulum" based pedometers, so it is more "honest" in its calculations. The best part is that it is very difficult to accidently "reset" it back to zero...so those steps add up all day without worry of losing count. The number that you may see at the bottom of some future postings will be the number of steps reached in a given day. Very likely not reaching the goal but trying to get closer! Off to "add some steps" now!

Winter pastimes...

...before the "crush" of work in black and white begins, nice to have some time to create some new items for gifts, shows, etc. This particular item was a gift to Cathy, the creator of the beautiful shawl given to me for Christmas. Hard to find something for Cathy that she cannot do for herself...but she does not crochet! Created this circular scarf/cowl in an alpaca mix for her before she does learn to crochet! Too bad that the warmth of this cowl did not prevent her from getting the cold of the century! Feel better, Cathy!

This beautiful arrangement was sent to me for with birthday greetings from my son, with specific instructions to the florist that the arrangement should be "funky"...and it is! It consists of "bird of paradise" flowers, three orange roses, some hydrangea, and some orchids, as well as some tall "twigs". What a nice surprise on a winter's day!

Handmade gifts...

are the best! Pictured here is a beautiful handknit shawl knit by Cathy of "ZigZagStitches". Cathy is an accomplished knitter, who, unlike me, knits things that are more complicated than the rectangles I always have on the needles. Difficult to see, but this particular shawl has tiny seed beads knit into the trim. The colors are beautiful, and it is sure to be worn often. What a wonderful surprise today to receive this! She also gave me an entire set of interchangeable needles with cords so that I will always have the right size needles ready to go....for those rectangular projects!

I managed to complete many handknit articles as I recovered from the leg injury of over a month ago. One particular scarf pattern (a more complicated rectangle than usual!) was the gift of choice for friends this year....along with dark chocolate and wine. (one must have antioxidants!)

Another unique gift was homemade granola with cranberries! Wonderful on yogurt, etc. or as a cereal or straight out of the jar! (shhh!) ...and can always count on Gail for her famous shortbread cookies. Thank goodness for these, which are passed off as my own Christmas baking! :)

Holiday Wishes...

from all of the "Sisters"....a day late! (originally started Dec.24th, continued Dec.26th!) A Christmas not to be forgotten, even though all of the presents did not get completed, purchased, delivered...(but hoping to accomplish that in the next few weeks...), the treats did not get made, the house was not decorated the way that it usually is, most of the decorations remaining in the many storage bins that house them...but nonetheless, the things that mattered were there. Great visits with family and friends, sharing the homemade gifts which did manage to get completed, and a wonderful holiday meal.

Most of the reason for the delay was not procrastination on my part. While at the show in Toronto, I managed to "take a great fall", and have been doctoring for this stupid walking accident ever since! I am sure that the invention of a "klutzy" sister will be in order for 2011!

Standing on the affected leg for three eleven hour days was likely not what a doctor would have ordered. However, on the "mend" now, and looking forward to a return to normalcy shortly. Hope that there were no similar accidents in your holiday adventures!

Handspun from Newfoundland!

Meet Shawn O'Hagan, of "Island Sweet" handspun yarns! Shawn was one of my lovely "neighbors" at the "One of a Kind" show. She dyes and spins her own yarn, plus at this show, had some great kits, complete with handmade knitting needles!

Beautiful handspun and hand-dyed yarn from Shawn's line. She had very little in her booth after just a few days of the show! Very popular artist, but sadly will not be returning to the show in the future...just too difficult to keep up with the demand! One can purchase her yarn and items in her "Etsy" shop, and there will be more items arriving after the holiday break. Every skein has a name! I have just knit a cowl as a gift for someone and it was called "whirling dirvish"!

Although we will miss Shawn's presence at the show in the future, it is great to know that she will be able to keep up with the demand as she expands on her internet sales in the upcoming year.

and it was great! Photos to follow, but was very pleased with the experience of my second time at the "One of a Kind" show in Toronto. The show continues as this is being written...it is an eleven day show, and I opted to exhibit for the first five day "stint". Most vendors are there for the whole eleven days...and my "hat" is off to them! The hours, except for Sunday, run from 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m., so five days was plenty for me! My number one salesperson, Cathy, was ready to go home at the end of five days as well. Customers kept us busy for the entire time, and we met some fantastic people. Met Lisa from "Fairy Card Maker" and Meg from "Priscilla Mae" with whom I have had great email conversations in the past!

Mission Accomplished...almost!

Just finished a fourteen-hour day in the workroom, preparing almost the last items for the show that starts this Thursday, and, for me, which continues for five days. Other brave artisans are there for eleven days, and these are long days...the show beginning at 10 a.m. each day and running until 9 p.m. However, it is a brisk, fun show, and it is great to see wonderful talent from across the country. If you are in the Toronto area, visit the "One of a Kind" show from November 25th-Dec. 5th! You will be glad that you did!

Will share pictures in the next post, but the camera can wait for today! Joining the "order" of "Sisters" for this show are "Sister Mary Melody", the piano enthusiast, "Sister Phyllis Driller", the dentist, and the chef, "Sister Amelia Love". These are literally "hot off the press"...just finished the last of "Amelia" a few moments ago. Pleased with the way that these concepts turned out...the ideas linger for a long time before realization!

Always like to have a number of each "Sister" for customers seeking a special gift. This did not seem to be a huge task until I realized that there about thirty more varieties in the group than there were a few years ago, these new ones often being a result of a request for a special order. I am full of ideas as to how to avoid the last minute "burn out" next year. However, although I do have a good memory, it is short. Already thinking of the personal projects I can now pursue, (after this show!) and no doubt, I will be writing a similar "burn out" article next year. :)

A Weighty Problem...

happens every time I visit the Post Office, and not just because it is right next door to the coffee shop. (although that can be a problem!) When shipping packages for delivery to customers in the U.S., it is a good idea to keep the packages to less than 250 grams...otherwise, the price of shipping "jumps" an extra $2.00...that has not been charged to the customer. A postage scale is a great thing to have...if you remember to use it before you head down to do the mailing. The "sisters" are almost down to a science, as far as keeping that weight down....unless one of them has munched on too much filling or is carrying something that is a little more weighted. However, today, two of the three items I shipped were faced with that 'over the 250 gram" problem, which I never would have considered because they contained ornaments and not the regular "sister" shipment. Shipping within Canada is even more expensive because it is based on the region to which you are shipping. The cost can vary quite a bit once an item leaves your own province. The problem is, of course, that the first item one ships is the most expensive. Adding items to an order does not double the cost, usually, and is the better "way to go", even when one is purchasing items.

Back to creating "Sisters" now....I have to pay my postage bill! :)

Looking for a 48 hour day!

It is becoming increasingly clear that I should have been spending a lot more time sewing through the long, lovely summer. While it is true that I manage best under pressure, I forget that I also tend to increase my personal quota for shows with each one that I do.....so, I am "drowning" in a sea of black and white at the moment. Forgive me if I "bloggeth" not....

Creating the "sisters" requires various "props", and one that I have been needing is something to represent a dentist. The name of the dentist at the moment is "Sister Phyllis Driller"...so while at my check up the other day, I proceeded to take out my phone to take a photo of a dental drill just as the dentist entered the room. Once I told him what and why I was doing this, he happily gave me my very own drill to take home in order to have a good example while sculpting the one that I actually need. (these were broken drills no longer in use) I will refrain from trying to do any dental fillings at home with this new item. Heaven knows, I have enough to do without adding this to the "mix"!

Cookies for Santa!

"Guess who" will be here in two short months, and he will be expecting cookies! (or something more interesting!) Part of the show line is this little "Santa" plate which is personalized for the child, or children, to set out each season for "Santa" to know where his special snack is! Each one of these is hand-lettered, and illustrated, and I think that I can do them in my sleep now! The plates are currently available at the "Etsy" site.

As that date was typed, it makes one realize how much has to get done in the next two months...and that is not even the personal stuff! Preparing for the "One of a Kind" show in Toronto, which takes place from November 25th-December 5th. This year, "Nun of a Kind" will be exhibiting from November 25th-November 29th, the first five days of the show. The selection will feature all of the "Nun of a Kind" sisters, plus ornaments and a little "side" of Christmas characters. Back to work!!

During the last two recent shows, the "Kidlids" have had the good fortune to be purchased by some fine looking little models. This little "pumpkin" is sporting a chenille "kidlid", and seemed very excited about it! :)
Wearing this lovely cotton "chapeau" is Samantha...and how cute is she! A perfect model who would make anything look good! Many new designs ready for the next show this weekend!

Invasion of the Scarecrows!

One of my very favorite shows happens in a town which experiences a "Scarecrow Invasion" this time each year! The whole town decks itself out in these characters, and there is a parade, etc. to celebrate the fall season...and the scarecrows! In addition to this, there is a craft show called "The Apple Harvest Craft Show", run by volunteers who do a fantastic job of organizing the show, and manage to draw in thousands of people to visit the vendors...something that we all appreciate! A true testament to their efforts is that most vendors stay for years and years, as have I, and it is a great chance to meet up with customers and vendors from years past, and a good chance to "catch up". This show always sees a record number of the "Nun of a Kind" collection leaving the booth, and that is always a good sign for the season.

Oprah tells me, yet again. My busiest time of year, when I should be abandoning any sort of reading except a quick magazine article, and I once again fall for the commandments from Oprah's book club. This new selection, which I just picked up, is "Freedom" by Jonathan Franzen. I have no idea what it is about, but Oprah told me to read it, so that is what I will do. She has told me to read many other books along the way, and I have obeyed. I enjoyed many of them, and a few left me wondering why I was continuing to read when I had absolutely no understanding of said book. Not sure if it was the books or me, but a few of them were abandoned along the way...and I always finish a book, whether I like it or not, so this was breaking my own commandment. The jury is out on this "Oprah" selection...and I hope that I do not even think of starting it until a lot more of the "sisters" are ready for my upcoming shows. Think I will lend it to "Sister Paige Turner" first.....

Shopping with....

"Sister Accumulata", the newest "sister" in the "order". She is the "sister" who loves to shop for various "nun-cessities", and carries her shopping bag, and her credit card from "Sister-bank". Her motto is "Let us pay"....and she is meant for all of the "sisters" in your life who enjoy retail therapy. Thanks to Jim from Wynnearts for the creation of her credit card....

At the shows at which the "sisters" are exhibited, there are often requests for those which would best suit a friend, relative, etc. and "Sister Accumulata" is a result of that request...a request that occurred many times before her actual creation. I once found little shopping bags which were part of a "Martha Stewart" line for her scrapbooking items. Although, for my purposes, they were somewhat pricey, I did purchase them. Of course, the next time that they were needed, this particular item was nowhere to be found! Again, it is the "findings" which I make myself that are easiest because I do not have to worry about other sources. "Sister's" shopping bag was created from a white envelope. A bit tricky, but I am sure with practice, this too will get easier!

I am sure that "Sister Accumulata" can be found frequenting major department stores looking for that "little black dress"....$$!

"Art in the Park"!

was a successful day for all involved, in that everyone had "their share" of the business, and the rain held out until the precise moment that the show was officially over. This meant that the packing up happened in the rain, but at least the show was a "draw" for many visitors. Many "sisters" left the "order", and need to be replaced for the upcoming shows. This is one of the shows at which I can bring other items in addition to the "Sisters" and Christmas, so there was quite a variety. The little hats that are at the "Sticks and Strings" shop on "Etsy" were a big hit...and I managed to give away many baby gifts to little ones with whom I have not had the time to connect! My attempt at having a selection of sock monkeys was successful, and the basket of those dwindled away as the day progressed as well. "Santa" plates were personalized for the little ones, and these will be a part of the first three shows to come.

Was great to see people that I haven't seen in quite a while...(Sue, Joan....we are still planning to have those luncheon dates!) plus students, friends, and co-workers. Did not get much of a chance to go and shop, nor did I get a chance to take pictures of the rest of the show, which I am sure would have been of interest. Thanks to Carol and Brenda for their help with the show...I would still be setting up if it were not for them!

The canopy is put away for another year, and I must say, I am glad that the worry of an outdoor show is over for another year. The organizers of this show did a great job, as usual, and I am sure that next year's plans are already underway!

The "sisters" will be off to visit Lisette and her friends this coming Saturday, and we are looking forward to our visit there. A little "home show"....should be interesting and fun!

First Show of the Season...

is fast approaching! It takes place this Saturday, September 11th, and is an outdoor show. A great event held by the Gallery in the Grove, and each year, seems to get a little better...if that is possible! The Gallery hosts about 100 vendors in our beautiful park. These days, the "spots" are assigned, and upon registration the morning of the show, or the evening before, one is able to partially or totally set up. I have done this particular show for years, and the signal that it was time to go and set up was when I looked out my diningroom window and saw flashlights in the park! A quick call to my friend who was the other "half" of our duo "back in the day", and we were on our way. We have been blessed with wonderful weather but for a few times...only one which required the show to close. It is a great event, and a one-day show, so after visiting with many customers, former students, and friends, the packing up begins, and the tent is put away for another year. I love this show, but I am very happy not to do other outdoor shows any longer. As it is, the "Weather Network" app on my ipod will be overworked this week as the forecast changes again and again. Those "Sisters" of mine are praying for great weather...and I think that they have some great connections! :)

on a Tuesday, and not wordless. Just a few shots of a hazy sunset at our local beach on a lovely August evening. Hard to believe that the summer is almost over, but weather-wise, a great one around here. Lots of beach-time, pool time, and reading on the deck. Now, reality is hitting....first show in a few weeks, so have been dedicating mornings to production, and still trying to get to a few of those special orders....

In the meantime, trying to find the balance between enjoying the days, and equally enjoying a rainy day (which has been very rare this summer) in order to justify not being outdoors, but rather, hard at work for the onslaught of the fall shows. Hoping that you all are enjoying these last days of summer!

is the order of the day for "Sister Anita Martini"!

This "sister" is always at the mercy of finding just the right trim for the martini glass, and thankfully, these objects have been discovered!! Of course, this "sister" is enjoying cocktails/mocktails during this never-ending summer...(what a great summer it has been!!)

Curiously enough, this "sister" has found a great martini to share with guests, etc. Heaven forbid that a bottle of this be around without other people being present, because it is just too good!! There is a product available at our local liquor store called "Sinsations"...and it is a chocolate martini all ready to pour! Too easy, and delicious! A bottle of this goes a long way poured over ice in martini glasses, and saves buying all of the ingredients one would usually need to prepare a martini like that. Too delicious to have around, though, unless there are several people waiting for their own martini. Of course, it would be delicious...it is chocolate!!

....and no, there is none in the house right now! :)

Sister Brigitte Bardough in the Kitchen....

and it isn't pretty! This recipe is likely very successful for some, but my effort has turned my kitchen into a sticky mess! Although the end result didn't quite turn out the way I planned, I am sure that the little people eating these "marshmallow treats" will enjoy them,..."nun" the less!

First saw this recipe done for a school bake sale I was having with my students. One of the parents brought these and they were a "hit". Of course, they were...they are practically all sugar...o.k., they are all sugar, when you consider the ingredients. However, every year my friend has a huge family reunion, and I usually contribute something to the event for the kids in the group. This year, I thought I would give that bake sale treat a try!

First problem....could not find the recipe anywhere! Typed the ingredients into "Google" and sure enough, several of that type of recipe appeared. Purchased the four ingredients...marshmallows, a bag of caramels, sweetened condensed milk, and butter. (rationalizing that this is a treat, not something that they would routinely eat!) The first step is to put the caramels, 1/2 cup butter, and the sweetened condensed milk in a double boiler....which I no longer have since I replaced my pots and pans! (found that out after I unwrapped all of the caramels.) Fashioned one out of two pots that I did have, and melted those ingredients together. Took a while, because it could so easily burn. Once this is done, marshmallows are dipped in the caramel mixture, and rolled in the rice krispies. For some reason, the ones that I saw at that bake sale looked a whole lot neater than the ones with which I ended up!

Placed the completed ones, such as they were, in a shallow dish, covered them, and put them in the fridge. Now, to deal with the kitchen and the caramel drippings from my efforts....and the rice krispie remnants that seem to be sticking all over the place....

Serves me right for giving sugar to other people's children....

...these lovely handmade glass beads by "Lush Lampwork" on "Etsy". The green shades of beads are designed to fit "Pandora" bracelet systems. The Pandora bracelets are very popular at the moment, and offer a wide selection of silver, gold, and glass beads as well. However, this work by "Lush Lampwork" would be a lovely addition to any bracelet. They are available in purple, blue, and amber tones as well, and featured silver accents on each bead. I am promising myself the blue collection.....and the purple, amber and green as well! :) I can imagine these beads strung together on a silver chain as a necklace as well. Just beautiful!

Also featured is a brighter collection of beads with the silver accents. These are all handmade in her own little studio in Malvern, Worchestershire, U.K. and are shipped very reasonably to destinations in the U.S. and Canada.

Looking forward to placing my first order for these! Such a nice addition to the "Pandora" bracelets, but so nice on their own as well. Hope that she can make them fast enough for the "onslaught" of holiday sales!

Nuns on the Run!

Gardener Extraordinaire...

like "Sister Virginia Creeper", I am not. However, since many plants were planted back when I thought that I might have a desire (what was I thinking??) to be a gardener, all of those garden beds now need "keeping up". Getting rid of the "bindweed" is a daily event, and thanks to some recent rain, the plants that really needed water will survive. There is just one other issue with which to deal...another plant which must be banished from the yard. Instead, of banishing it, however, it has been "trained" to climb a little trellis in the yard against the fence. This "clematis" has, oddly enough, never bloomed this year, even though the other ones have. The vine grows and grows, and it is manipulated into the lattice for support, and there is anticipation for the blooms which will surely occur. However, this has proven to be a "rash" decision on my part. This lovely vine, as it turns out, appears now to be poison ivy! The upside is the lessons one learns from such a mistake...all of the ways that one might remedy the dreaded "itch" of the contact with the plant, and all of the "google" images that now tell me how to recognize poison ivy. (who knew that it grew as a vine??? ...well, I do now!)

Now, where did I put that calamine lotion....??

Lessons from the Nuns....

are easily found in this presentation of "Late Night Catechism". Thanks to Meg who sent along this link and reminded me about this great show, which I have yet to see! I believe that it is basically a "one-woman" show, and the idea is that "Sister" presents her lessons, all the while interacting with the audience, just as a Catholic Nun would have done "back in the day" (or perhaps even today???), chiding them for wearing skirts too short, taking away cellphones (all in good fun!) and having someone face the blackboard as punishment...perhaps for chewing gum. In addition to having some fun with this premise, there are lessons in catechism along the way, and in this clip, you will hear that questions are asked of "Sister", and she answers them in a factual, but humorous, way. This show has never been performed around my town, but I would love to see it someday. The "Nun of a Kind" figures, however, have made it into the hands of some of the people involved in this show as gifts for producers, etc.

The Garden of "Weedin"

A quick post about the weed mentioned in a gardening post earlier on....the one that I have been "chasing" all through all of the gardens in the back yard. Mentioned it to people at the nursery, and they assured me that it was, in fact, morning glory, and that it seeds very easily. Wish it were that! Upon further research, and reading of many "posts" about this, have found out that this is "bind weed"....and it does just that! Wraps itself around plants, and if allowed to flower (and yes, it does look like morning glory!) then goes to seed, and spreads...everywhere! Various suggestions....spray, pull, don't pull, take out all of the plants and start again (are they kidding me??) and finally, this last bit of advice, which I am taking to heart.

Stylin' Angels....

complete with lips, and toenails, and cleavage...oh my! Proves that even fancy angels, with their makeup, and daring clothing, can be admitted through the "pearly gates".

This little angel is completely soft-sculpted, and features a taffeta gown, ruby red lips, and painted toenails.

This little angel does not make it to many shows, simply because of the time involved to create each one. The angels that have been exhibited have been called "Cheeky Cherubs", "Floosie Fairies", and "Heavenly Hotties". I am sure that there are several other names that could be applied! They fly off at each show because they are great as an ornament, or hanging from light fixtures, etc. to add that little conversation piece for friends who might appreciate having a non-traditional angel in their collection! Currently available in my "Etsy" shop in a "duo pack"....

Great gift for the knitter in your family, to prevent chasing balls of wool that have traveled under the sofa, chair, etc. while you work! ( I speak from experience!) Just discovered this great item on IndieNorth which showcases Canadian artisans.

Whether to weather the weather....

Part of being in this business is doing art/craft shows, where you have a chance to meet customers "face to face", and enjoy this interaction. This time of year, many of the successful shows are outdoors....and cause the exhibitor to constantly refer to the "Weather Channel" the week of the show, praying for a favorable forecast.

I have attended a wonderful show as an exhibitor for many years, but the last few years, I have not applied, simply because of the weather "drama" that might occur. We have had wonderful weather, and sunny skies for most of the years. Occasionally, there have been showers...no big deal....and at times, there has been horrific weather that causes a huge "mess" in terms of mud, puddles, keeping wares from harm's way, but still manages to draw those people who enjoy the show. This year was one of those years...but worse. Thankfully, Saturday was a great day for my friends who were exhibiting....big crowds, great weather, and good sales. As I worked on my yard chores here at home, I was wishing that I had been there, too, at least as a buyer. However, Saturday night proved to be an evening of warnings of extreme weather. Nobody would have been in the park at that time, and vendors had been warned about the possibility of severe weather. The result that this weather caused the show to be cancelled the next day, and organizers and vendors struggled with the problems that remained, mostly the damage caused by wind and rain. A difficult situation for everyone...but thankfully, they had had record crowds the day before, and a successful show. Still, a shame for vendors and organizers alike.

Diversions....

are keeping me away from creating lately....beautiful weather, the gardening, reading good books on the deck...just too nice to be working in my workroom!

The unusually warm weather has forced everything to bloom at once, it seems. By the time the trimming, etc. is finished in one area of the yard, it seems that it is ready to start all over again at the beginning! "Chasing" a particular weed right now, which grows like a vine, and looks like a morning glory, if it is allowed to remain in the garden that long. It has climbed every type of flower, flowering shrub, structure, in the gardens, and could be the source of every morning "workout" in itself! Right now, this "gardener" is determined to exhile this weed, but likely by the end of July, it is the weed that will win!

As for production....do I dare say that I need a rainy day? :)

"Special" angel....

In an effort to be ready for the fall shows, I have been trying to make up items that are part of the "line". This little angel ornament is one of the many ornaments that are made each year, but has a very special connection. The proceeds from the sale of these angels is directed to the "Victorian Order of Nurses" for their special projects. It was created for quite another reason. A client/co-worker was stricken with a terminal disease, and was being cared for in her home. This little angel was created for her, just to place in a little card with "thinking of you" wishes, because this lady collected angels, and had collected many of ours through the years. I was told that she hung the angel from her I.V. "drip" pole, and that this angel was with her during her illness. When she passed away, there was a note in the local paper from the family about all of the special floral bouquets, gifts, etc. that had been sent to her. Wishing that we had sent something more substantial than the ornament and our little "Fullabean" angel (from my friend and former partner in this work), it was not until my friend went to the visitation that we realized the significance of this little angel. This little ornament was in Evelyn's hands, and it with her still. Never underestimate the worth of whatever gift is given...we did not realize how important this was to Evelyn.

That year, at our annual open house, we filled a Christmas tree with one hundred ornaments, and raised $500.00 for the organization that had helped Evelyn in her time of need. Her name is on a special plaque because, although we had no idea, it was a year that the V.O.N. was trying to raise $500.00 from various businesses in the area for the 100th anniversary of the V.O.N.

So, along with all of these business names, Evelyn's name stands with them, for her unintended part in helping to raise the needed funds. We went on to sell angels for several years after that, in memory of Evelyn, and donations were made to two different branches of the nursing organization.

Getting this new "host" of angels ready for the season will hopefully help once again!

Sister Holy Matrimony...

the wedding planner, has been attending wedding showers as "'tis the season!" A few weddings coming up, so June weddings mean May showers...

One of the showers recently attended had a unique theme. All of the guests were asked to bring items to suit a particular month. We were given lots of "notice" because the invitations to the shower were sent out a few months early. My month was October, and because of my fall craft show line, I was able to incorporate some of the items I create. This new bride hosts a Hallowe'en party each year, so that was the theme I chose, rather than "fall" or "Thanksgiving" (Canadian Thanksgiving is in October....) It was fun trying to find items to "go" with the items I knew that I was going to make for the gift....an oval ceramicware casserole (the base for the gift), some matching mini-bakers for small loaves, condiments, etc., black and white tea towels, some "Hallowe'en" plates, and the handcrafted items, soft-sculptured pumpkins (one has a face!), a "Fullabean" witch, and some "candy corn" diva dishcloths in the typical colors. All wrapped up in my favorite way to wrap....cellophane wrap, with "Hallowe'en" cookie cutters tied to the raffia ribbon!

Even though it was fun to put the gift together, it was even more fun to see what people came up with for the other months...the favorite being "June"...this was a group gift and they chose stainless mixing bowls, (nested), a strawberry dish that somehow was a huller, slicer, etc. all in one, martini glasses, strawberry vodka, and recipes for strawberry martinis. The "summer" months gifted a variety of items...coolers for the patio, dishes, chairs, etc. and the people who managed to have a "holiday" month had fun with their choices as well. It was as much fun to watch the presents being opened as being the one who received them! (well, almost...come to think of it, all my stuff needs replacing...an anniversary shower might be in order!:)

Some Very "Punny" Sisters!

Janet and Greta Podleski are two very talented, funny, and creative sisters...they wrote a cookbook quite a few years ago which "started it all" for them..."Looneyspoons". They went on to create another called "Crazy Plates", and their latest effort is called "Eat, Shrink and Be Merry". I have enjoyed their cookbooks, not only because the recipes are great, but because they are so entertaining! Full of puns in their titles, and humor aside, each page also has great nutritional information as to how to change one's habits for more nutritional ones. Because of our common "love" of puns, I have been in contact with these great sisters a few times now, and have their permission to share a recipe with you!

Chapter titles such as "Beyond Beleaf" (salads), "Poultry in Motion", "A Chorus Loin", etc. , indicate an idea of what you are "in for" with the individual recipes names! The whole idea, though, that you can make something very tasty, and leave out, lessen, or substitute ingredients which are more health-beneficial, is the real beauty of the books. For a summer barbeque last year, I made a salad from the book, and it was a real "hit" because it reminded one of the more calorie-laden version from a while ago, and yet was every bit as flavorful! Plus, this particular one looked so nice because it was layered. (when it comes to my own cooking, it is all "smoke and mirrors"...I try to make anything look better than it might taste...but won on both counts with this recipe!)

"Titanic Salad with Iceberg Lettuce"

Dressing....1 1/2 cups light mayonnaise (not fat free)

1/2 cup light sour cream

1 1/2 tbsp granulated sugar

1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice

1/4 tsp salt

Salad.... 1 large head iceberg lettuce

1 1/2 cups very thinly sliced baby carrots

1 1/2 cups thinly sliced celery

1 1/2 cups diced red bell pepper

1 cup frozen peas

1/2 cup cooked, crumbled bacon

3 cups chopped cooked chicken breast

3/4 cup packed shredded light medium or old (sharp) cheddar cheese

1/4 cup chopped green onions

* to make the dressing, whisk together all dressing ingredients in a medium bowl. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

* To assemble salad, tear (don't chop) the lettuce into bite-sized pieces and spread evenly in serving dish. (use a dish that is about 9x12 inches in size and at least 3 1/2 inches deep. A standard glass lasagna dish is too shallow) Top lettuce with carrots, celery, red pepper peans, bacon, and chicken , in that order.

*Spread dressing evenly over chicken layer and spread to edges, like you are icing a cake. Sprinkle cheese over dressing and top with green onions.

*Cover and refrigerate overnight. Serve cold.

Greta and Janet add that iceberg lettuce, although not as nutritional as other types, is the one needed here for this type of salad. Also, they suggest that a rotisserie chicken cut up works well for the chicken needed.

Personal note: I had a large deep salad bowl which I used for this salad, and added a few extra lettuce layers to make the salad a little bit deeper. Also, since my version was for a barbeque, I left out the chicken so that this would be more of a sidedish salad than a meal salad.

Others you might want to "check out" from this book are "Oinkers Away", a great navy bean and turkey bacon soup, "Spud Light", a potato dish, and "Feast from the East", an Asian beef noodle salad. shows....not really a fan! However, one type of show has me "hooked", and that is the type of show which showcases businesses, entrepreneurs, inventors, new ideas, etc. I live vicariously through these people who may find/not find success with their given idea. Absolutely love our Canadian show, "The Dragon's Den", on our CBC network, and the U.S. show, "Shark Tank", which has the same type of format....people "pitching" their ideas to hugely successful business people, in hopes of developing the "next big thing". Sadly, all that is available now are re-runs of these shows (which I still watch!!).

"Cupcake Girls" to the rescue! Just when I thought that there would be nothing in this "genre" to watch while I work away at my own "stuff", we are able to view the business ventures of two young ladies who went into business together, and "broke" many business "rules" to do so. They own a very successful cupcake company (are they bakers? No! They hire people who are bakers....) selling the coolest looking cupcakes...and that is it! That is the concept, and judging by the number of stores that they now run in the Vancouver area, that is all they need! If you are not able to view this show in your area, there are episodes available on line. Very inspirational, and thankfully, they are successful in their efforts.

Just like "velcro", "google", "Mrs. Fields", etc., it makes me wonder once again....why didn't I think of that?? :)

Baseball Season...

and "Sister Runnata" is ready! As a matter of fact, she has been running out of the "Nun of a Kind" shops lately, probably due to the beginning of the baseball season, and is serving as a source of "hope" for given teams.

Interestingly enough, there was an excerpt on "Sunday Morning" today about a special Sister who, along with the members of her convent, "The Sisters of the Holy Spirit", bake cookies for their favorite team, "The Cleveland Indians", as a way to help cheer them on. This began in 1984, and has developed into an online business for the nuns, with the profits going to the support of a home for older adults. Sister Assumpta is well known at the games, and even had her own baseball card! You can find the cookies, called "Nun Better", at the Monastery Greetings site.

I am thinking that "Sister Runnata" might have to grace the cookie-baking kitchen of these sisters to help them cheer for their favorite team!

like "Sister Skye Rider" is not something that this "sister" used to like to do....would avoid any voyage that involved travel by air with any excuse possible. This had to change when travel across the country to visit a family member made it necessary...or travel by car for weeks.

...and like a miracle, the whole experience became not so scary, manageable and dare I say...fun?? Other than being cramped with two other people in the seats that I can afford (will I ever travel business class? Likely not...), the whole miracle of being able to get across the country or from one to another in such a short time is amazing to me now!

Lessons in air travel learned this past trip were *travel light and you won't have to pay for baggage (although that is changing on some airlines)

*If you can't travel with carry-on, at least try to get it down to one suitcase. (we didn't....)

* try not to sit near people with babies (you can't predict this, and even though babies are crying, they are still cute...so this really isn't an issue for some of us!)

....and here is my big philosophical/meteorological statement....every day is sunny if you can just get past the clouds! (and if that appears as a title for a self-help book someday, remember where you heard it first!

Wednesday with Martha

Have not watched "Martha Stewart" in quite a while....not enough time, or total feelings of inadequacy while watching her many talents...not sure what my excuse would be! However, while tidying up my sewing room/studio today, I managed to see a few segments. Today, Martha was making crepes. Of course, her creation using these crepes was just wonderful...as usual.

I was reminded of one of my "bright" ideas to have my students host a "cafe" and serve crepes to the entire school population. They would bring in the fillings, etc. and I, along with some "volunteers", would make the required crepes....about three hundred. I talked my book club friends into helping me make these. Actually, one of my friends in the book club told me that she would teach me how to make them. (forgot to tell you that I didn't really know how to make them!) In any case, we did manage to make one hundred that evening. (note to self: do not allow your volunteers to have wine before a given task is completed.) I spent the following weekend making the other two hundred crepes myself for that event....and have never made them again!

The event, however, was a great success. It would not matter how good the crepes are...whenever food is served at school, it is always a success!

at the "One of a Kind" Spring Show and Sale....being held right now at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto. A great opportunity to see artisans from across Canada, exhibiting clothing, furniture, jewelry, accessories, gourmet food products, etc.

Had a wonderful time at this show last year, and hope to get there again this year. It is great to be able to see all of the vendors that one doesn't have the time to see when exhibiting at the same show....just isn't time to see everyone and all of the fine work represented.

While there, do stop by "Rootham's Gourmet" to pick up treats for entertaining, and hostess gifts. Lots of fine sampling going on there!

I see a wardrobe of hats coming her way, in hopes that each one is photographed for the site.

I wonder how this model would look in a habit for the "Nun of a Kind" site?? :)

Spring Cleaning...

with "Sister Immaculata"! That is what I should be doing, when in fact, the most spring-cleaning being accomplished is that on my computer! How did the mail file get over 300 messages that need to be deleted? (and that is just one mailbox?) The photo file could be stripped of all of the blurry photos, photos of sidewalks, (how did that happen?), and duplicated of every file I have ever saved. The "documents" file could lose the report card comments filed through the years, the jokes I thought were just too good not to save, etc. The "Bookmarks" file is just ridiculous! So, you see, there is far too much cleaning right here at my desktop to possibly consider cleaning closets, ovens, cupboards, cabinets, etc. Besides, "Sister Immaculata" is here...I will leave all of that in her capable hands!

a photographer, like "Sister Filmore". I have purchased a light box, a number of "natural light" lamps, set up a little studio in my office, watched several tutorials online, and still do not like to have to take new pictures. However, today it is overcast, and I am outside, trying to re-take some photos for my "Etsy" shop, and for a digital photo frame for shows. Somehow, I found my way to the office again to type a blog entry....coincidence? I think not. I will do anything to avoid this task....

Now, back to the "Sisters"...they are freezing outside waiting for me!

The weather is wonderful here, and the pubs and patios will likely be busy with all of the Irish (and who isn't Irish on St. Patrick's day??) celebrations. Lots of green beverages in the future of many....but "Sister" here will be sipping on her green tea!

"Sister" shop....

It had to happen! I was spending so much time with yarn that it became necessary to open a new shop at "Etsy" to feature items from these efforts. (there are only so many babies in my life to "gift"!) It was also an attempt to keep the "Nun of a Kind" site at "Etsy" free of too much clutter. The "sisters" were feeling a little territorial of their space!

The new shop, currently not very well "stocked", simply because of the photo-taking, uploading, etc. that has yet to take place, is "Sticks and Strings" because....well, everything in it will be made with some sort of "stick" or "string"! The shop will carry the little "chapeaux" that are currently being made out of cotton yarn, and other various items that are knit or crocheted.

Orders for special "sisters" are also being created at the machine. New photos await for this shop as well!

.....and I have plans to have my little nephew model all of the hats for me before he gets too old and realizes that most of them are for girls!

"The Sisterhood of the Winter Coats"....

I was sent a great photo of some lovely ladies who live in Walker, Minnesota. Unfortunately, I am not able to share this with you because, for some reason, the scanned picture that they sent me is not able to be "uploaded" at the moment. Will modify this if I am able to figure it out! In any case, Ruth, from Minnesota, called me to add another "Sister Mary Christmas", the ornament, to a previous order, and told me her story....Ruth is a para-professional at an elementary school in Minnesota, and often has to spend time supervising students out on the schoolyard. (brrrr! I am thinking it must be very cold in Minnesota!) Ruth and her co-worker decided that, because they both happened to all be wearing long black coats, they looked as though they were wearing habits like nuns! They proceeded to come up with names for each other, and Ruth, because she had the most experience, was named "Mother Superior". Two more co-workers joined them the following fall season, and also happened to be wearing long, dark coats. The ladies decided that they would join the "order", and each took their special names...."Sister Mary Margaret", "Mother Superior", "Sister Virginia", and "Sister Bertrille"...(this woman had loved "The Flying Nun" as a child....)

Ruth, consequently, found the "Nun of a Kind" website, and ordered ornaments for all of the honorary "sisters", added pin-backs to each of them, and fashioned them into decorative pins for the ladies to wear on their coats. A friend of hers also embroidered the "nun names" on the ornaments for her.

Always fun to hear the stories behind the purchases, and whenever I am making more ornaments, I will be thinking of these ladies "on duty" with their long dark coats, and their special pins. I just hope that the wind doesn't "catch" "Sister Bertrille"! It could be a "nun stop" flight! :)

"Nunsense"....

is a fabulous musical which features....of course....the lovely "sisters" in black and white. I have had the great good fortune to see many of the versions of these plays, as the Sisters work their way from one disaster at their convent to another. These plays, whether locally produced by community theatre, or by professional players, feature comedic antics performed by the "sister" actors. As a bonus, along with the comedy, there are some great songs included in each play, and strong voices. I think that the spirit of "Lucy Ricardo" lives on in these performances by the "sisters"...it must be great fun to be involved!

Happily, although not acting or singing in those plays, I have to say that I have been "involved" in several productions along the way because there have been requests for the "sisters" of "Nun of a Kind" to be gifts for the actors at the end of the performances. Usually, when four or five of the "sisters" are to be shipped off, it is because someone found these "on line" and wished to purchase little momentos for the actors. A nice way for me to be involved...and I don't even have to "break a leg"!
