Starting early!

Each year, ornaments are created which generate a donation for a few special charities. Sometimes the season "gets away on me", and I find that I do not have as many of these ornaments as I would like to have ready for the fall season, in particular. So.....starting early! There should not be the major panic to have these ready for this year's season, or orders from the sites.
"Janet's Snowfolk" are snowmen with a pink ribbon. They are in memory of a good friend who was a victim of breast cancer. Janet loved Christmas with a passion, and would even change the window dressings in her house to reflect any holiday season! She always shopped with a notebook, making careful records of what gift went to a certain niece, nephew, etc. and was a true "Martha" in every sense of the word. She gave so many lovely gifts to people that she was working on a new notebook the last few times that I witnessed her shopping for the holidays. It is in honor of her that "Janet's Snowfolk" was created. The sale of these ornaments provides a donation to the "Breast Cancer Society of Canada" each year.
"Evelyn's angel" provides a donation the the "Victorian Order of Nurses", and is in memory of a lovely lady who had a special angel collection which comforted her through her illness. The ornament sold each year is like the one which was sent along to her in a card, and which she cherished more than I ever knew until her passing.
Hopefully, this year will be no exception for the raising of funds through these ornaments....and by starting to make them now (averting my eyes from the book I received for Christmas!!) I will have enough for the season ahead!

Explaining the "Sisterhood"!

The "Nun of a Kind" collection might need a little explanation to those who are seeing the sisters for the first time!  There is a "Sister" for just about anyone, and the fun is in their names! For instance, the dental assistant sister is "Sister Flossie", and she carries her toothbrush and floss in hand. The sister who loves to vacation and head for sunny beaches is "Sister Mary Sunshine"....she has her towel, sunhat, and "shades" and enjoys her time "catching rays"....although her habit is the best SPF protection one can get!
"Sister Mary Tailor Moore" is the sewing sister, and is a great companion for sisters who love this hobby. She carries her sewing machine and fabric to "whip up" a lovely new ensemble for a special event. "Nuns of Steel" is one of the sisters who likes to spend time in the gym. She carries her barbells and is ready for a demanding workout.
There are over 80 sisters in the "order" at this point, although not all of them are pictured in the websites. In addition, custom requests are gladly accepted, should customers require something unique for a gift, award, or keepsake. Be thankful that you are not beside me at a craft show....the concept is explained over and over again! The best part of being a show is listening to the reaction to the various names, and hearing the laughter that follows!

December....end or beginning?

Christmas come and gone for yet another year! It was a rush to get things out in the mail for last minute gifts ordered on the sites, but hopefully, everyone's special "Sisters" arrived in time!
At a time when the sewing room should receive a total "overhaul", there are new orders arriving, and new ideas to create. (A few new books beckon to be read, however....perhaps the sewing can wait for a week or two!) For those who have not visited www.nunofakind.etsy.com  or www.nunofakind.com  recently, several new "sisters" have joined the order. Look for many new ones to be added during the upcoming months as well.  Just in time for curling season, Sister Bonnie Spiel has arrived! She is one of many new additions in the last few months.
Also new to the site, www.nunofakind.com  is "Nunderware"...."Mother Souperior" aprons, teatowels, and "Sister Mary Christmas", the ornament.  Some of these items are also available on the "Etsy" website.
January will be spent creating, adding new items, and learning how to take better photos...(I am determined to learn how to do this! Thankfully, the pictures used on the regular website are those of someone far more adept at this skill....and his work in having all of the sisters in their "habit-at" adds so much to the site!) Remind me I said that I was going to do all of  this when I am heading to the library looking for more books to read!!
